Dear Viriditas Community,
I am in the midst of rereading The Personal Correspondence of Hildegard of Bingen: Selected Letters with an Introduction and Commentary by Joseph L. Baird. Last night I was reading a letter written by Volmar, St. Hildegard’s life long secretary and friend. He writes:
“ When that time comes (when we will no longer see you with our fleshly eyes), our grief and woe will surpass the joy we now feel. Who then will give answers to all who seek to understand their condition? Who will provide fresh interpretations of the Scriptures? Who then will utter songs never heard before and give voice to that unheard language? Who will deliver new and unheard-of sermons on feast days? Who then will give revelations about the spirits of the departed? Who will offer revelations of things past, present, and future? Who will expound the nature of creation in all its diversity? We know that God’s grace has bestowed these capacities upon you along with a sweet and humble character and a heart that pours out maternal affection on all around you.”
As many of you know, connecting with the power, love and wisdom of St. Hildegard has transformed my life. I have healed physical ailments, regained access to my creativity as I sing, paint, tap dance, write and explore how to use today’s technology for good in the world. I will be sharing what I have learned in a new series of Healing With St. Hildegard group sessions, starting this coming Saturday, April 7th from 3:30 to 5:00. I invite you to sign-up for the SPECIAL OFFER for the whole Healing with St. Hildegard series of classes. Four classes for the price of 3 if you sign-up before my first class on April 7th! St. Hildegard persevered and overcame many obstacles in her life in order to follow her divine calling. Find out how she gained the strength to move through a debilitating illness in my blog post this week, The Healing Benefits of Art as a Meditative Practice.
How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras
Once I discovered that St. Hildegard’s work has its roots in ancient Hinduism, I started studying Sanskrit and learning how to chant mantras. Chanting mantras is a wonderful way to dissolve the suffering that we are experiencing, come to a state of balance, and to heal our physical pain. Mantras are potent and powerful sounds that create a shift in your entire being.
While chanting a Sanskrit mantra, your body relaxes and your mind becomes calm. Your head and your heart connect to your body. Energy flows to support the process of restoring your body, mind, and health back to wholeness. Back to peace and balance. Which is really our natural state.
In my guidebook, How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras,
you will learn 7 short Sanskrit mantras using an audio recording and guidance on how to pronounce each mantra. I’ll explain the meaning of each mantra and why the sounds of each have healing potential.
Each mantra can remind us that we are already whole, as part of the Divine. Each one supports us in returning to the state of wholeness, of balance.
The entire guidebook for healing all 7 chakras through the chanting of mantras will be coming out this Spring!

“Thomas Merton: A Prophet for Our Times”
An Evening with Rev. Matthew Fox
Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was one of the great spiritual writers and mystic-prophets of the twentieth century. From the time of his conversion at the shrine of the Black Madonna in Cuba in 1940 to his untimely martyrdom in Bangkok for opposing the war in Vietnam in 1968, his spirituality evolved profoundly. He journeyed deeply from being very much a dualistic monk from 1940-1957 to being a prophetic leader leading out a creation spirituality path under the influence of Zen master D.T. Suzuki and Meister Eckhart beginning in 1958.
His prophetic voice addressed issues of Ecology, Feminism, Racism, the rights and oppression of indigenous peoples, Technology’s excess, War (he coached the Berrigan brothers among others in non-violent resistance), Peace, bogus religion (he called the marriage of fundamentalism and empire the “greatest orgy of idolatry the world has ever seen”). He offered medicines to heal us including Deep Ecumenism (his close friendship with the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh are well known), a theology of the Cosmic Christ (“How is it possible to tell everyone they are walking around shining like the sun?” he asked following on a mystical experience at lunch time rush hour in downtown Louisville) and the cultivation of contemplation.
