Dear Viriditas Community,

Hail all you magnificent artists and prophets!

David and I had a spectacular experience with our first class: Introduction to Creation Spirituality at the Fox Institute. It was as if we had a divine appointment with each participant! One of the beautiful parts of the program for students is the holistic approach of working both sides of their brains (and bodies), right and left. Each day combines body prayer, seminar, art as meditation, process group and a break during the day for a delicious meal.

In our recent class, I gave an exercise inspired by MC Richards. David and I chose random objects from our home. Using these objects, the students let the material speak to them and then, as a group, they created something artistic together using these objects. What a beautiful experience unfolded before our eyes that also resulted in the forming of a strong community within the class.

Want to join together in community to deepen your spiritual work? My next class will be at my Viriditas Home Studio and will focus on the wisdom that St. Hildegard shares for our current times.

St. Hildegard, even in the 12th century, called to the people and urged them to awaken. To awaken to the Divine that was living in the world. To fall in love with it and to passionately take actions to create health and healing in the world.

“We shall awaken from our dullness and rise vigorously toward justice.  If we fall in love with creation deeper and deeper, we will respond to its endangerment with passion.”  – St. Hildegard of Bingen

The Divine Word, or Divine Wisdom, is alive and radiant in all beings. It calls and urges human beings to implement their Viriditas, their greening power, from this fertile ground.

“The Word is living, being, spirit, all verdant greening, all creativity.”  – St. Hildegard of Bingen

Learn more about the Divine Word from St. Hildegard in my blog post this week, 3 Ways to Discover the Divine in Your Life, Inspired by St. Hildegard.

Do you hear this call? The call to contribute, to create within the world? To bring forth your divine gifts into the world.

“All creation is awakened, called, by the resounding melody, God’s invocation of the Word.”  – St Hildegard of Bingen

We’ll dive deeper into this work to support you in bringing forth your gifts into the world in my upcoming Healing with St. Hildegard classes. Join me to discover more of the wisdom of St. Hildegard for our modern times at my Viriditas Home Studio at 800 Zamia Ave. in Boulder.

How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras

Prayer can be one of the powerful components to our spiritual practice. Prayer is our way of calling upon the Divine or a spirit guide and asking for support. Initiated by you, prayer is an active request for guidance that you put forth.

When we compare prayer to meditation – prayer is communication to Spirit from you. Whereas, meditation is silencing the mind to create space for Spirit to speak to us – either in the moment or through our intuition in our daily lives.

Here I share a prayer that can be used in balancing your root chakra, clearing any obstacles that are preventing you from feeling safe and secure in the world.

“Good morning, Divine Presence, you the Power behind all Power.

Today I ask you to help me change the way I think and feel around my security and my survival. No matter what challenge shows up today, help me connect to my root chakra and become aware that you are with me and that I am not alone.

Whenever I feel internally unsettled today, help me remember that my strength lies in YOU. Show me a spiritual way to move through every situation that arises today and give me the strength to carry it out.”

This is a wonderful prayer to use in the morning and can be followed by the mantra chant for Ganesh to support you in your day.

The entire guidebook for all 7 chakras complete with prayers to help balance all the chakras will be coming out this Spring!

Dear Viriditas Community,

Whew! Last week was a big one. David and I taught our first class at the Fox Institute for Creation Spirituality. When we finished the week and Saturday morning rolled around, I could hear St. Hildegard lovingly whispering in my ear: “Moderation, dear Jeannine, remember moderation is the queen of virtues.” And so, on Saturday and Sunday, I rested…seeking alone time in nature and napping.

For a closer look at how moderation helps us find balance in our lives, take a look at my blog post this week on St. Hildegard’s Words of Wisdom on Creating Balance for Health.

One of the gifts of last weekend is we had some warm weather. How my body rejoiced being outside, soaking in the sound of the birds chirping away. The daffodils in my garden are starting to peak out of the ground, as is the parsley!

St. Hildegard gave us the gift of the concept of Viriditas that can be described as the divine life force that lives and breathes within all living beings. This potent force is full of vitality. It makes all things grow, expand, and thrive.

For St. Hildegard, the Divine permeated all of life on Earth – every plant, every animal, every stone, every human being.  And Earth, as mother, is the womb of creation and of nourishment.

“The Earth is at the same time mother. She is mother of all that is natural, mother of all that is human. She is mother of all, for contained in her are the seeds of all. The Earth of human kind contains all moistness, all verdancy, all germinating power. It is in so many ways fruitful. All creation comes from it. Yet it forms not only the basic raw material for humankind, but also the substance of the incarnation of God’s son.” – St. Hildegard of Bingen

St. Hildegard was disturbed by what she saw as the lack of care of our Mother Earth by people, even in the 12th century, and spoke out courageously and directly to the people.

Now in the people that were meant to be green there is no more life of any kind. There is only shriveled barrenness. The winds are burdened by the utterly awful stink of evil, selfish goings-on. Thunderstorms menace. The air belches out the filthy uncleanliness of the peoples. The earth should not be injured! The earth must not be destroyed!” – St. Hildegard of Bingen

And she called us, as guardians of all of creation, to rise up and take action to protect Mother Earth. “We…are more dependent on the rest of creation than any other species…. We are the guardian of creation.”

“We shall awaken from our dullness and rise vigorously toward justice.  If we fall in love with creation deeper and deeper, we will respond to its endangerment with passion.”

“Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars. Gaze at the beauty of earth’s greenings. Now, think. What delight God gives to humankind with all these things. All nature is at the disposal of humankind. We are to work with it. For without it we cannot survive.”  –St. Hildegard of Bingen

How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras

In creating balance in your own life, keep in mind the health of your chakras. Chakras are part of our subtle or energy body. This invisible energy is the vital life force that keeps us vibrant, healthy, and alive.

They work to regulate the flow of energy in our body so that we can have a variety of experiences within our body – mental, creative, sexual, emotional, and more. Actions that we repeat, whether we are conscious of them or not, create pathways in our chakras. These patterns or habits – mental, emotional or behavioral – may be unhealthy or healthy for us in life.

Clearing or balancing our chakras can help to dissolve energy pathways that do not serve us and encourage new ones to flow that do serve us. Leading us to a deeper purpose and meaning in our lives. Ahhh……..health.

The root chakra, located at the base of the spine, supports us in being grounded or rooted. To have a sense of safety and security in life on the Earth.

It is the Foundation of Life. The wisdom of Mother Earth energy within us.

Being rooted in the wisdom of Mother Earth gives us a palpable sense of being rooted in the Divine. When our root chakra is functioning well we know that the Divine is our true source of safety and security. We can grow from there within the eternal Light of the Divine to become our highest selves.

In balancing the root chakra, we can call upon Ganesh with his wisdom, courage, and strength to remove any fear that is holding us back from feeling safe and secure within our lives. You can find the audio recording of the Ganesh mantra to use for chanting here.

The entire guidebook for all 7 chakras will be coming out this Spring!

Dear Viriditas Community,

I am bursting with excitement as I anticipate the upcoming Doctor of the SoulHealing With St. Hildegard series starting on April 7th!

As many of you know, St. Hildegard of Bingen has been a great source of inspiration and strength for me. One of the first things I learned about St. Hildegard was that she lived to be 81 years old in the 12th century.  This is only one of her many extraordinary accomplishments. She can serve as an inspiration to all of us in current times. She was born in the Rhineland of current Germany which was burgeoning with rich soil and flourishing vineyards. One of her many gifts to the world was the idea of Viriditas, the divine greening power that gives vitality to all of creation. I have always been drawn to the concept of Viriditas and named my company and studio Viriditas. Discover more about this idea in my blog this week, Viriditas, The Greening Power of Life

In the 12th century when St. Hildegard lived, the depth and breadth of pursuits such as hers were extremely rare, especially for women.  Yet, she embarked on a path of vocation for her own spiritual growth and in service to the health of others and to the Divine.

Despite great personal risk and continuous opposition, she brought forth her work and ideas in many areas.  In the field of holistic health and healing, she encouraged people to awaken to their own ability to heal, taking responsibility for their health and the choices they made in daily life.

St. Hildegard believed that if one was in harmony with the wholeness and vitality of the divine universe, then you were healthy and full of life force.  But if you fell into disharmony, illness arose.

She thought that disease and illness resulted from a deficit or lack. The treatment of such illness was through rest, herbal remedies, nutrition and reconnecting to the divine order of life. Healing occurred when the deficit was resolved, recreating balance in a holistic way, to once again arrive at health within spirit, mind, and body.

Balance and moderation in all areas of life were key, in St. Hildegard’s view.

St. Hildegard developed many herbal remedies that she recommended to aid in this healing which are still at the heart of treatment used by naturopathic doctors in modern Germany.

“Good People,
most royal greening verdancy,
rooted in the sun,
you shine with radiant light.”
– St. Hildegard of Bingen

Dear Viriditas Community,

This week I want to begin with a quote from one of my favorite Celtic poets and philosophers, John O’Donohue. He speaks about the Divine as an artist who uses imagination for expression in Creation:

“Everything that is – every tree, bird, star, stone and wave – existed first as a dream in the mind of the divine artist.  Indeed, the world is the mirror of the divine imagination and to decipher the depths of the world is to gain deep insights into the heart of God. The traces of the divine imagination are everywhere. The beauty of God becomes evident in the beauty of the world.”

To find more inspiration from this quote check out my latest blog post:Celebrating Diversity, a Gift of the Divine.

How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras

If you would like deeper access to the heart of God, I encourage you to explore my upcoming guidebook How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras. I’m in the final stretch of completing the guidebook. What a joy it’s been to put this together as a useful resource to guide others in the powerful work of chanting mantras for healing.

As you continue to practice the healing mantras at home, consider how you approach creating a sacred space for this work.

This work is for your health, your growth, your joy.

If you don’t have one already, take time to make a special corner or table that warms your heart. This sacred space is for you. It will serve as your altar.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be considered as a religious space, but a healing space to nurture you and your body-spirit connection. Be sure it’s a space where you can come to calm and center.  Where you can step away from the rest of the world into quiet solitude without being distracted by something nearby.

Take a closer look at the space you may use and see what is around it – the items, the color, the lighting. How will these support you or maybe distract you?

Take time to consider what stand or table you will use, what cloth may cover it and what items you will place on it. Items from the natural world such as a plant, stones, or a feather may be important pieces for grounding and connection.

What lighting would you like? A lamp nearby that emits warm light or just the light of a candle? Maybe the natural light that shines in a window nearby?

What else do you want to include? Possibly the following:

  • A candle with matches
  • A diffuser for essential oils
  • A meaningful poem or verse
  • A small statue of a god or goddess that is important to you
  • A photo of inspiration

On my altar, I like to include the following items:

  • Mary Candle – at the top. Ever reminding me of Mary’s compassion and sweet, caring love.
  • St. Hildegard Statue – back left. St. Hildegard is a constant source of inspiration and strength in my life.
  • Print of a Painting by My Painting Teacher, John Parente – back right. I model a lot of my teaching and healing work after John. His profound spiritual life and powerful artistic gifts inspire me to never give up on my spiritual path.
  • Star Candle – center. This candle reminds me that I am part of a vast, powerfully beautiful Universe.
  • Green Mala Beads – around the Star Candle. I use these beads in meditation. They help me count mantras and act as a tactile guide as I chant.
  • Feather– front left. St. Hildegard describes herself as a feather on the breath of God. The feather reminds me to only ask for knowledge of God’s will for me and the power to carry it out.
  • Hanuman Statue – front right. This Hindu Deity is often depicted carrying Rama and Sita inside his heart. This statue reminds be that my devotion to the Divine is the most important thing.
  • Green Heart Stone – front right. Green has always been my favorite color. Once I found out it is also the color of the heart chakra, my love for this color deepened. Truly…seeking to connect with the field of unconditional love…which I choose to call God…and to love unconditionally… is my daily practice.

Be creative in this process!  What speaks to you?  What brings warmth and a mood of reverence and reflection for you in your sacred space?

Dear Viriditas Community,

This week is a quiet one for me. The only family member with me this week is my youngest son, Joshua. How I love spending time one on one with family members. Such a sweet opportunity for connection. Joshua is a composer, and this week I am especially rejoicing as he shares his latest creations with me on our drives to and from his school every morning. For those of you who would like to hear his music, check out DJ BLONDINO on Soundcloud!

These days I’m also happily preparing for my class coming up at the Fox Institute on Feb. 26 – March 2, Introduction to Creation Spirituality. In order to deeply connect with the material I am teaching, I am creating audio recordings of myself reading the assigned books out loud. Last week I finished recording Stories of Awe and Abundance by José Hobday. Sister José Hobday was one of my favorite teachers during my doctoral studies. I took her class called Native American Rituals. Her enthusiasm for the presence of God in the ordinary is contagious. As I was reading José’s words out loud all nestled up in my comfy living room couch by the fire, it felt like Sister was with me. I could feel her love, her glorious sense of humor and her profound Wisdom filling my soul. I invite you to get a sense of her by watching this video.

If you enjoy the video, I encourage you to read her book. It is full of stories drawn from her own experience growing up as a Native American Catholic in the American Southwest. If you want to explore how to incorporate her teachings into your daily life, then join me and David for our class: Introduction to Creation SpiritualityClick here to find out more. I’m so looking forward to this fun adventure! I’d love to see you there.

Dear Viriditas Community,

Today is my parents’ 61st wedding anniversary. I marvel at their marriage. What a remarkable team they are. One of many things they have modeled for me is incredible strength and courage. They have birthed many spectacular creations over the years, not the least of which are their four children. With each birth I have seen how they kept nourishing their creations, and that no matter what obstacles they faced, THEY NEVER GAVE UP!

It is this kind of courage I see playing out with the birth of the Fox Institute. I want to share some photos with you of the new Fox Institute for Creation Spirituality in Boulder. This is where David and I will be team teaching our Introduction to Creation Spirituality Course in a few weeks.

The Institute just hosted a free community gathering on January 15th in honor of Rev. Martin Luther King. It was a powerful event that included song, drumming, and poetry to honor MLK’s legacy and to imagine strong, healthy communities into the future. Please enjoy this inspirational video created by Fox Institute Pouria Montazeri for this event.

I’m also very excited to share with you that two additional classes have been added in May that I will be teaching at the Fox Institute in Boulder. The classes will be held from May 14th through May 18th. This is wonderful news for all of you Hildegard lovers!

The first class is a seminar entitled The Mystic Hildegard.  In this one, we will immerse ourselves in St. Hildegard’s creativity via St. Hildegard’sJourney through the Senses, an exhibit that shows the life and work of this powerful mystic. We’ll dive into the first biography written about St. Hildegard in the 12th century and touch on St. Hildegard’s theological writings/illuminations as well as her medical texts.  I’ll also make available some of St. Hildegard’s remedies for sampling. We’ll complete the class with an exploration of how we can use St. Hildegard as an inspiration in our own lives. (Image: St. Hildegard statue on the relics church in Eibingen Germany.)

The second class is entitled Engaging Hildegard’s Music, Art and Herbs and is an Art As Meditation offering. Through singing, guided imagery, movement, and meditation related to the life’s work of St. Hildegard, we’ll enter into a deep meditative state with this powerful saint. Through this doorway, we will access our deepest creative selves and express our souls in a variety of artistic mediums including watercolor painting, drawing, singing, movement, journaling and modeling.  We’ll share the creative process as well as our creations within class thus forming a community of creative powerhouses.

Did you know you can access the strength of your inner mystic? Curious about what a mystic is?  Wondering if you really are one?  Check out this week’s blog post: Are You a Mystic?

And if you are interested in exploring more about being a mystic, don’t forget to check out the class I am teaching in February on an Introduction to Creation Spirituality here.

How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras

Mantra practice continues to give me courage for my life. I was just writing a piece for the Healing Mantras guidebook and was remembering a time many years ago when I woke up in excruciating pain in my pelvic area.  While at the doctor’s office, feeling fearful about the pain I may experience undergoing a pelvic exam, the Saraswati chant “Om Aim Saraswatyai Namaha” came to my mind.  I began to chant it in my head silently. I felt my body relax and an inner knowing that all will be well washed over and through me.

You’ll be able to find out more about this mantra and the chakra that it helps to heal in my guidebook.  It will be coming soon – in February!

In closing I remind us all that the word courage comes from the French word courage which is a composite of two French words: coeur (which means heart) and large (which means large). May we all, like my parents, live our lives with large hearts!

In Viriditas,
Jeannine

Dear Viriditas Community,

How I love writing to all of you each week! I hope you are enjoying this new weekly rhythm as much as I am….

This week I want to focus on CREATIVITY. What are your plans for nourishing your creative self in this new year of 2018?  What new ideas or forms are bubbling up within and waiting for you to express them?

Creative expression puts us in touch with our inner core.  A part of the Divine flow. It’s enlivening and invigorating. And brings to us a possibility for self healing.

Creativity is the breath of life.

As you all know, one way I like to engage in creative expression is through music. I have posted a video of a recent performance of the marimba band KUTANDARA that I am a part of on the doctorofthesoul website. We were part of the 1st Annual Martin Luther King Talent Show of Boulder last Monday night. The Talent Show was held at the Avalon Ballroom and was a fundraiser for the I Have A Dream Foundation. It was a heart warming evening. I encourage you to watch the video. As you listen, ask yourself the question: How am I called to nourish my creative self?! Click here  to access the video.

We are all artists, capable of creating something new in a moment of inspiration and imagination. Through this, we can connect more closely with the Divine, and the Divine in each other.

Check out this week’s blog post on how to Discover the Artist Within.

And if you are interested in exploring your own creative expression as an artist, find out more about the class I am teaching in February here.

Healing through the Chanting of Mantras

I continue to be in my creative flow as I develop my mantra practice. The mantras used for chanting in healing are precise instruments that support us in connecting with the Divine, often through the doorway of the attributes or energetic force of a Hindu god or goddess. This is possible for anyone to do, with or without any belief in religion.

Saraswati, the Goddess of Wisdom and Music
Through the power of sound within the mantra, chanting as a spiritual practice leads us closer to our Higher Self, dissolves obstacles in life, and brings compassion and peace into the world. Making you be the best self you can be in your life.

As you continue forward with your practice of mantra chanting, you do want to eventually dissolve the image of the Hindu god or goddess used in the practice. This will facilitate the power of the mantra to come forth through the sound. Then you can enter into a deeper place of stillness where transformation can arise.

As a spiritual explorer, are you looking for a way to deepen your spiritual practice so that you can be even more effective in your work in the world? So you can be your best self and make a positive difference in the world?

If so you may find my guidebook on How to Bring Life to your Chakras helpful. It will be available soon. It is a simple, step-by-step guide that will support you in deepening your practice in balancing your chakras through mantra chanting. It’s engaging, effective, and even fun! Easy to do in only take 10-15 minutes of your time each day. I’ll update you as soon as it becomes available.

All right dear ones… I close with this quote from St. Hildegard of Bingen:

“Humankind, full of all creative possibilities, is God’s work. Humankind alone is called to assist God. Humankind is called to co-create. With nature’s help, humankind can set into creation all that is necessary and life-sustaining.”

I would love to hear about how you are nourishing your creativity in 2018!

In Viriditas,
Jeannine

PS  Audios to guide you in your mantra chanting practice at home are available in my Free Healing Library.

Dear Viriditas Community,

New Year Greetings to you!  I hope you had a joyful and rejuvenating holiday season.

I returned home from my holiday travels to continue my preparations for my class: The Essence of Creation Spirituality  starting on Feb. 26th. David and I are thrilled to be team teaching this class for the first time at the new Fox Institute for Creation Spirituality in Boulder. This course is a framework for living that dives into an exploration of the sacredness of the universe, the wisdom of science, the passion of creativity and the power of social change.

(This book is on the required reading list for our February class.)

Click here to watch the video to learn more about the class. In this video you will not only find out about our class, you will also hear what happened when David and I first met many years ago on the Berkeley Pier in California!

At the Fox Institute David and I are part of a phenomenal group of faculty. Truly this group of spiritual teachers is breathtaking. Find out more about who is behind this powerful education here.

Did you hear about the bomb cyclone on the east coast?  Maybe experience it? I did!
What a name, right?  Makes you anxious just hearing that.

I was on my way traveling to New York City from the Swiss Alps when the bomb cyclone decided to direct its brutally frigid path to the east coast, bringing biting winds and blinding snow.  My flight was cancelled. Plans unexpectedly halted.  Disappointment and upset swirled about in the air. Fear and anxiety of the unknown.  What destruction will occur?  What devastation?  When will it end?

In the midst of the chaos, I gathered my strength to return to my center and ground myself.  I tapped in to the depth of my own spiritual practice for support.  What comfort I found, with warm, embracing arms of this inner work to help me through my current challenge.

Although this bomb cyclone was an incredible snowstorm on the east coast during this holiday season, I know we all experience bomb cyclones within our lives that have the potential to throw us off track, tear us down, disappoint and make us anxious.  For this is life on this beautiful planet Earth at this time.

How do we navigate through this?  And come out healthy and strong?  Still growing and reaching to become the best self we can become? The course that David and I are teaching in February will offer helpful tools – tools to help you remain calm, strong and hopeful even in the midst of the bomb cyclones within your life – whatever they may be.

This course will teach you how to open your heart, how to communicate and connect with others, and how to navigate through those experiences that have the potential to throw you off track.

How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras

I hope you were able to make use of the Holiday Gift that I sent a few weeks ago to support you in taking care of yourself through the holiday season.  It was so exciting to launch this introduction to How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras as a holiday gift!  If you missed it, you can still access it HERE.

The rest of the guidebook with engaging stories and specific recommendations along with gorgeous audio recordings of the mantras will be available in February.  A perfect spiritual practice to support and nourish you in the challenges of daily life. Truly helpful.  I would love to hear any questions or comments you have about the holiday gift material.

For now, I will close with one of my favorite lines from the Introduction of Original Blessing by Matthew Fox.

“When I use the word “wisdom”, I think of the definition that the Native American tradition gives us: that the people may live. I am very at home with this understanding of wisdom. I believe it encompasses the breath and depth of cosmic and human living, and I believe it names what God the Creator wants for all of her children: that the people of this precious Earth, all  global peoples, may live. Bangladesh people, old people, hungry children people, robust adolescent people, people in socialist countries, people in capitalist countries – that the people may live.”

Join me and David at the Fox Institute in February and experience what it means to really live!

In Viriditas,
Jeannine

PS  Don’t forget you have access to the audios for the Healing with Mantra for all 7 chakras in my Free Healing Library.  A brief recap of each chakra can be found here to support you in your practice at home.
