From: The Sixth Vision of the First Part, Scivias
I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Now, imagine a crown of light being placed on your head. Slowly, let the light of the crown enter your soul. Then let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your soul:
“Imagine two armies of heavenly spirits on high in the heavenly mysteries. They are shining very brightly. Those in the first army have wings on their shoulders, and they have faces that are like the faces of people. The looks on their faces appear as if they are pure water. Those in the other army also have wings on their shoulders, and they too have faces that are like the faces of people. The looks on their faces appear as if they are the image of the Word of God shining in a mirror. You are not able to detect any other form among either of these two armies. These two armies are surrounded by five other armies, arranged in a circle as if they are a crown. Those in the first of these other five armies have faces that are like the faces of people. They are shining brightly from their shoulders downwards. Those in the second of these other five armies are shining so brightly that you can not look at them. Those in the third army are as white as marble, and their heads are the same as those of people except that they have little burning torches coming from them. And they are covered from their shoulders downwards as if with a cloud made of iron. Those in the fourth army have the faces of people and the feet of people. They have helmets on their heads, and they are clothed with tunics that are the same as those with the white marble. And those in the fifth army are not like people at all, but they are as red as the dawn of the day. You can not, however, determine any other form in these.
All of these armies are surrounded by two additional armies, also arranged in a circle as if they are a crown. Those in the first of these last additional armies are full of eyes and wings. In each eye, a mirror appears; and in the mirror, the face of a person appears. Their wings are raised on high to the heaven’s. Those in the second of these last additional armies are burning as if they are a fire. They have a lot of wings. These wings reflect like mirrors, and they reflect all the distinguished orders of the institution of the church. You do not see any other form among these last two armies. But all of these armies are resounding with wondrous voices – accompanied with every type of music – all the miracles which God performed in the blessed souls. In this way, they are glorifying God magnificently.”
1. How have you been helped by heavenly spirits?
2. Imagine a mirror appearing, and in the mirror you see your soul. Ask your soul, “What is yearning to be born in you?”
I have created a recording of my voice reading this text with some beautiful background music. (If you would like me to send you this recording, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with your email address, and I will send it to you.)
