Meditation #12: The Flame Of Inestimable Brightness

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Light a candle. Gaze at the candle light, taking in the warmth and beauty of the fire. Close your eyes and let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your inner most being.

“You see the Word of God hanging on the cross. You also see a woman of great size shining as brightly as the wisdom which comes out of an ancient council – being led through divine power to the Word of God. Raising herself upwards, she is poured over with the blood from the side of the Word. For she is happily betrothed to the Word through the will of God, and she is nobly endowed with the body and blood of the Word

And you hear a heavenly voice speak to you:

Let my Word be a bride to you for the restoration of my people. You may be their mother, regenerating their souls through the salvation of the spirit and water.

And when this woman is strengthened in her powers, you see, as it were, an altar which she frequently approaches. She returns her dowry to the altar, showing it humbly to God and the angels. You see a priest, clothed in holy garments, approach the altar for celebrating the Eucharist. When he does, a great light of peace comes down from heaven, together with some angels, and shines around the altar. This light remains there until the completion of the Eucharist when the priest withdraws from the altar…While the priest was singing the praise of the all-powerful God – holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts – and was thus beginning the mysteries of the Eucharist, a flame of inestimable brightness suddenly descends from the opened heaven upon the offering. It surrounds the offering completely with its brightness, just as the sun makes things light with its rays. And while the flame radiates around the offering in this way, the flame bears the offering upwards invisible to the secrets of heaven. Then the flame sends the offering back downwards to the altar again, just as a person draws a breath inwards and then sends it outwards again.”

1. Imagine the woman of great size placing you on the altar. Feel the great light of peace coming down from heaven. It surrounds you completely with its brightness. Then feel a flame of inestimable brightness suddenly descending upon you. Flames are radiating around you and they then are bearing you upwards to the secrets of heaven. Then feel the flames sending you back downwards to the altar again. Feel the transformation that has taken place inside your being.

I have created a recording of my voice reading this text with some beautiful background music. (If you would like me to send you this recording, feel free to email me at with your email address, and I will send it to you.)
