jasper stones

The soul is often weakened by the devil’s antics, or disturbed by the darkening of the spirit. Thus the soul loses its clear vision and suffers delusions of the imagination. Negative thoughts entice the devil’s influence to such a degree as to terrorize the soul. The devil will insidiously undermine human thought with delusions and lies. Even saints and holy people may perceive shameful visions, mesmerized by Satan’s sinister laughter. (CC 82,83)

Diabolic dreams and nightmares can be easily remedied and positively controlled with the aid of the pillow filled with wood betony leaves. (see Dreams, Part 4 of 6)

Besides the betony herb pillow, Hildegard suggests the precious stone, jasper, to regulate one’s dream life. Thunder and lightening dreams may announce threatening sicknesses and may even cause sicknesses. Persons with such dreams should take a jasper to bed with them for a longer period of time. The cold jasper placed on the skin is helpful, “Because then the fantastic forms and fiends will fly away and get lost.” (PL 1257B)

In all cases, a natural biological sleep is essential. For all of those who rely on sleeping pills and other drugs, their sleep is not sleep at all. Rather it is anesthesia which severely inhibits the natural dreaming phases and the fluctuating patterns of natural sleep. For these people, we recommend sauna treatments while inhaling chestnut extract. This technique evokes relaxation, while the chestnut cleanses the brain. An aid for those who still have difficulty sleeping is one cup hot wine with one tablespoon valerian root.

Just as the sun is the light of the day, so is the soul the light of the body awake. And just as the moon is the light of the night, so also is the soul the light of the body asleep. Whenever the body of a sleeping person has the right warmth, its marrow will be warmed in the right proportion and degree. When the person is free from the storm of conflict and moral contradictions, he or she will very often see the truth because then the knowledge of the soul is at rest. The moon shines its light bright and clear, whenever the night is free from the turbulence of clouds and winds. But when a storm of various and contrary thoughts controls the body and spirit of the person awake, and he or she goes to sleep with this storm, then that which the soul sees in dreams is almost always false. The knowledge of the soul is so darkened under such contradictions, that it cannot see the truth. The moon cannot shine clearly in a storm of clouds. (CC83, 27 ff)

Are your nights free of the turbulence of clouds and winds? Does the knowledge of your soul shine brightly so you can see the truth?

Dreams: Prophetic Dreams, Part 5 of 6

(Excerpt from Hildegard of Bingen’s Medicine by Dr. Wighard Strehlow & Gottfried Hertzka, M.D.)

Jacob of the Old Testament

Jacob of the Old Testament

When God let sleep descend on Adam, his soul saw in a truly prophetic fashion many things, because it was still free from sin. In like manner, the soul of a sleeping person can also see many things prophetically, if that same person is not burdened by sins. (CC 82,22)

Those light, joyous individuals like Adam and Eve and Jacob, who are not weighted down by sins and vices, will receive heavenly messages and experience prophetic dreams. Such persons are of an extraordinary nature, full of grace and peaceful in character. They seldom have nightmares and more often have enlightening dreams of prophecy. Like Adam’s brothers, it is possible for all of us to receive heavenly messages and experience prophetic dreams.

Because the human soul is of God, it sometimes sees the truth and the future while the body sleeps. It knows what awaits us and sometimes it knows what happens…When thoughts are positive and holy, the grace of God reveals truth to the dreamer. (CC 82, 28)

Have you ever had a prophetic dream?! I would love to hear about it!

betony-light-leaves

Wood Betony or Stachys officinalis

It frequently happens that a person sleeping on a side or some other part of the body becomes uncomfortable or irritated, or suffers some bodily discomfort. Because the individual is sensitive, his or her soul sees and feels these annoyances and senses that the body coupled with it could be injured. It gathers its strength, draws in the wind it sends forth from the marrow, and in this way awakens the individual from its sleep. (CC 85,7)

Older people with cardiac disorders may often wake up hyperventilating with a fluttering heart after a nightmare. Nightmares and sleeplessness seem to be the fate of modern humanity. Modern treatment for such cases includes sleeping pills, tranquilizers, or psychotherapy, all more-or-less useless. But an excellent remedy is wood betony leaves, to be used in a little herb pillow placed next to the skin during the night.

Wood betony leaves (stachys officinalis) should only be used for herb pillows, never drunk as tea. Health stores have dried wood betony leaves, which are best sewn into a pillow. A pound of leaves is stuffed into an old stocking and knotted at both ends. Over that one can pull a pillow case made out of sheer gauze cloth. Through the scent, and perhaps through the fine dust which settles on the skin of the dreamer, unpleasant dreams stop immediately.

Whoever is plagued by wrong dreams should have betony leaves close by when going to sleep, and this person will see and feel fewer bad dreams. (PL 1182B-1183A)

Dreams: Waking Dreams, Part 3 of 6

(Excerpt from Hildegard of Bingen’s Medicine by Dr. Wighard Strehlow & Gottfried Hertzka, M.D.)

sleep

But when noise and turmoil or loud conversation prevail in the surroundings of a sleeping person, the air will echo. Then outside air will strike back the air which is found in the person, because the elements are also present in the human body. As soon as the soul notices this movement in the air, it will draw its energy back to itself and cause the person to wake up. It often happens that someone unwillingly awakens through sudden noise, touch, or unexpectedly in some other way. (CC 85,14)

Those awakened by noise disturbances, such as a baby crying, a snoring spouse, or a barking dog, suffer a deprived dream life, and since they have little dreaming, there is no rest. Those who wake up after a harmonious dream cycle will enjoy a completely rejuvenated nervous system. This has been confirmed by dream researchers. The nightly fluctuation of periodic awakening is accepted today as healthy and refreshing. The leadened deep sleep in one stretch will not create a refreshed awakening. The refreshed morning arising is related to dreaming, whether the dreams are remembered or not.

As soon as the marrow of the sleeper increases and is strengthened, the soul restores the whole continuity of the sleeping body. In this manner it takes back the gentle wind, which had been sent out of the marrow of the individual for his repose, and the person awakes again. If one often awakens at intervals and between times falls asleep unexpectedly, then the marrow will not acquire its complete richness and energy, and the limbs will not be completely rested. But the person who often wakes up and then sleeps again will invigorate marrow and limbs in a very pleasant manner. It is similar to the baby who often sucks and again stops sucking to gather strength for its recuperations. (CC84, 31)

Do you awake refreshed after a night’s sleep? You can thank your dreams if you do!

Often enough, the soul when dreaming is burdened by the thoughts, opinions, and emotions that preoccupy the mind while awake. The soul will be affected by these elements in dream life to such an extent that it becomes as bloated as rising sourdough, regardless whether the thoughts are good or bad.

…If a person goes to sleep mentally occupied with unfitting joy or sadness, with wrath or fear, with lust for power or the like, the devil in deviousness will play upon these vulnerabilities…                                                     (CC 82,23,ff)

Often a confused and preoccupied mind prevents one from falling asleep. The accompanying sorrow, fear, anxiety, and other contradictory emotions disturb the blood chemistry. The vessels constrict and dilate, unable to relax sufficiently for sleep. When anything of a positive nature that evokes happiness is seen, heard, or felt, the blood vessels will relax to experience the joy. Yet, even these relaxed vessels may not induce the necessary sleep, unless the overall temperament is in order. Restlessness and sleeplessness will recur until at last peace is found with the emotions.

I have learned how important it is to create an inner sense of calm during the hours before I fall asleep at night. I truly have a “bed time ritual”. At around 8 pm each night, I retreat to my bathroom for a luxurious bath, complete with candles, Epsom salt, essential oils and soothing music. I then take my evening supplements with a tall glass of San Pellegrino with lemon or lime in a gorgeous green glass. I warm up my heating pads and snuggle under the covers with some spiritual literature to read. Finally, I sing a few chants very quietly and slowly and Zzzzzzzzzz…. I do not like the devil messing with my sleep!

What do you do to find peace with the emotions before bed time?

Dreams: Messengers Of The Soul, part 1 of 6

(Excerpt from Hildegard of Bingen’s Medicine by Dr. Wighard Strehlow & Gottfried Hertzka, M.D.)

Moon-Phases-Pale

Dreams are as intrinsic to life as the air we breathe. An undisturbed sleep is essential to well-being. A healthy dream life rejuvenates the nerves, like a battery recharging. “As a person sleeps, the marrow within the spine regenerates.” While awake, the nerves weaken and drain, comparable to the moon traveling through its phases. Similarly, plants release the life force from their roots, transmitting vital energy to blossoms in the summertime.

In like manner, the nervous system is renewed through sleep and, upon awakening, the marrow takes back the “gentle wind it sent out so that the person had his peace (during sleep)’ as Hildegard would say.

Hildegard observes five different dream patterns.

  1. Day Rest Dreams: caused by unresolved problems, suppressed problems, unresolved events, and unsettled events of late evening.
  2. Waking Dreams: superficial sleep resulting from noisy disturbances, and dreams which come from eating (potato dreams).
  3. Dreams Induced by Illness and precognitive dreams.
  4. Prophetic Dreams: positive, inspiring dreams experienced by harmonious, well-balanced individuals.
  5. Diabolic Dreams.

More about each dream pattern will be coming in the weeks ahead. In the mean time, let’s start paying attention to our dreams!
