Meditation: The Signs of the Prophets

The Signs of the Prophets by Dr. Jeannine Goode-Allen. From the cd, The Living Light Speaks. This meditation is inspired by the Fifth Vision of the First Part of Scivias and is set to St. Hildegard’s Song O Jerusalem which I recorded for Feathers On The Breath of God.

Meditation #13: The Anointed Mountain of God

From: The Seventh Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

blog #13 image

I invite you to place a stone or crystal on your altar. Then get comfortable in front of your altar and take a few deep and slow breaths. Light a candle and sense the unconditional Love of Divine Presence in you and in everything around you. Close your eyes and let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to you.

“You see a burning light which is of a great size, just as any mountain is high and great. The light is divided into many tongues at its top. In front of this light, there is a great crowd of people standing. The people are covered in white, and there is a brightly shining covering in front of all this crowd. This covering shines like crystal and it covers the people from their breast right down to their feet.

In front of this crowd, there is a certain worm of wondrous size and length, lying on its back. The worm is a sight of such horribleness and madness that people cannot imagine worse… The black and hairy worm is full of sores and pus. It has five different areas on it, starting at the head and going down across its belly and on right down to its feet. One of these areas is green, another white, another red, a certain one yellow, and a certain one black. All five of these areas are full of deadly poison.”

Questions:

1. The five deadly poisons are sadness, irreverence, false glory, withdrawal and lukewarm imitation. Are you afflicted by any of these poisons in your life?

2. Imagine that you are the burning light of great size, like a high and great mountain anointed with Divine Power. Breathe in the light and power. Feel how this Divine grace dissolves any of the five poisons that may be afflicting you. Breathe out the poisons.

Meditation #12: The Flame Of Inestimable Brightness

From: The Sixth Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

blog #12 image

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Light a candle. Gaze at the candle light, taking in the warmth and beauty of the fire. Close your eyes and let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your inner most being.

“You see the Word of God hanging on the cross. You also see a woman of great size shining as brightly as the wisdom which comes out of an ancient council – being led through divine power to the Word of God. Raising herself upwards, she is poured over with the blood from the side of the Word. For she is happily betrothed to the Word through the will of God, and she is nobly endowed with the body and blood of the Word

And you hear a heavenly voice speak to you:

Let my Word be a bride to you for the restoration of my people. You may be their mother, regenerating their souls through the salvation of the spirit and water.

And when this woman is strengthened in her powers, you see, as it were, an altar which she frequently approaches. She returns her dowry to the altar, showing it humbly to God and the angels. You see a priest, clothed in holy garments, approach the altar for celebrating the Eucharist. When he does, a great light of peace comes down from heaven, together with some angels, and shines around the altar. This light remains there until the completion of the Eucharist when the priest withdraws from the altar…While the priest was singing the praise of the all-powerful God – holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts – and was thus beginning the mysteries of the Eucharist, a flame of inestimable brightness suddenly descends from the opened heaven upon the offering. It surrounds the offering completely with its brightness, just as the sun makes things light with its rays. And while the flame radiates around the offering in this way, the flame bears the offering upwards invisible to the secrets of heaven. Then the flame sends the offering back downwards to the altar again, just as a person draws a breath inwards and then sends it outwards again.”

Questions

1. Imagine the woman of great size placing you on the altar. Feel the great light of peace coming down from heaven. It surrounds you completely with its brightness. Then feel a flame of inestimable brightness suddenly descending upon you. Flames are radiating around you and they then are bearing you upwards to the secrets of heaven. Then feel the flames sending you back downwards to the altar again. Feel the transformation that has taken place inside your being.

Meditation # 11: Mother Wisdom

From: The Fifth Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

meditation #11 purple flowers

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Let your entire being become relaxed. Close your eyes and let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your inner most being:

“Imagine a woman of great size. Then imagine a bright light which is as white as snow and as transparent as crystal. The light makes the woman bright from her head down to her throat. From her throat down to her navel, another light of reddish color surrounds her. From her throat down to her breasts, she glows with a reddish color that is similar to the dawn. From her breasts down to her navel, she shines with a color that is similar to a purple hyacinth. Where she glows with the reddish color, she reflects that light upwards to the mysteries of heaven. And on the reddish color, there is a most beautiful maiden whose head is uncovered, showing her black hair. This maiden is clothed with a red tunic which flows down to her feet.

And you hear a heavenly voice speak: This flower on the heavenly Sion is the mother and flower of roses and the lily of the valleys. O flower, you will be betrothed to the son of the most powerful king. You will bear the most celebrated of offsprings, and you will be comforted at the proper time.”

Questions:

1. Become one with the most beautiful maiden. Feel the depth of the strength and wisdom of the great woman fill your entire being. Are there any challenges you are facing in your present life? The great woman is filling you with her compassion and peace. Feel the comfort of being held by her.

2. As you settle into this deep sense of peace, connect with your inner most being. What truth is there to be found in the depth of your soul? Let it bubble up. Offer this truth to the great woman with gratitude.

Meditation #10: The Tower of Strength

From: The Fourth Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

nice_emeralds

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Connect with the ground under you. Close your eyes. Now, let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your entire being.

“Imagine a large round tower which is built completely out of white stone. It has three windows near its top, and from these three windows such a bright light pours out that even the cone-shaped roof of the tower can be seen more clearly in the light. The three windows are decorated around their outside with beautiful emeralds. The tower is located straight behind you, similar to the way a tower is placed in the wall of a city. You can not be destroyed in any way because of its strength.”

Question:

1. What is it in your life that you need strength for? Imagine holding two large emeralds in each of your hands. All the green of nature is concentrated within the emerald. The power of the emerald is yours as well. Breathe in the strength of the tower behind you. Feel the light pouring out of each of the three windows flowing into your body and your soul. Know that whatever you are in the midst of, the strength of the tower is with you. You are filled with light.

Meditation #9: The Queen of Peace

From: The Third Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

meditation #9 candle

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Then light a candle. Breathe in the peace of the candle light and let your gaze slowly take in each sacred object you have placed on your altar. Close your eyes and let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your heart and mind.

“Imagine you are a woman of great size – just like a great city. You have your head crowned wondrously, and your arms are covered with the long sleeves of a tunic which glistens from heaven right down to the earth. Your womb is full of holes, much like a net, and a great crowd of people are moving about in it. You do not have any legs or feet which can be seen because you are standing in front of an altar which is before the eyes of God. You have your hands stretched out around the altar, and you are looking most keenly throughout the heavens with your eyes. You can not look at your garment closely, except that you notice that it shines with a very bright peacefulness. Your breasts are surrounded with such splendor that they shine as a reddish dawn full of reddish lightning. And you hear various kinds of music being sung ‘as intensely as the reddish dawn’.

You spread out your splendor as if it is a garment, and you say: “It behooves me to take in and to provide for.” And then as if in a flash of lightning, a multitude of angels run to you. The angels perfect you by making various seats and steps on you for people to sit on.

Next you see some black infants near the earth, but in the air. They are like fish swimming in the water. These infants enter your womb through the many holes that are in it. You then sigh, drawing the infants up to your head where you breathe them forth through your mouth, remaining pure in the process. Then a peaceful light appears to you. This peaceful light takes the black skin from each of the infants and throws that skin beyond life. You then uncover the peaceful light for these infants and cover them with a white garment.”

Question:

1. What or who are the black infants in your life? Name each one of them out loud. Write their names on little pieces of paper and put the papers in a little bowl on your altar. Circle the bowl with your candle of peace and cover the bowl with a white cloth.

Meditation #8: The Person in Sapphire Blue

From: The Second Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

Cropped person saphire blue

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Then let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your soul:

“Imagine a very bright light, and inside it there is a person who is the color of sapphire. This person is completely surrounded by a very pleasant fire of reddish color. The very bright light completely surrounds this fire of reddish color, and at the same time this fire completely surrounds the light. Both the fire and the light surround the person, existing as one light with one force of potentiality.

Then listen as the Living Light speaks to you. It says: ‘The bright light signifies God who is without any blemish of illusion, defect, and falsehood… The person signifies the Word who is without any blemish of hard-heartedness, ill will, and unfairness… The fire signifies the Holy Spirit who is without any blemish of dryness, death, and darkness.’”

Questions:

1. Imagine becoming one with the person who is the color of sapphire… In that connection, let go of any of your hard-heartedness,ill will and unfairness…

2.Then feel yourself inside the very bright light. Also feel yourself inside the very pleasant fire of reddish color. Then gradually let yourself be filled with the fire and the light. You are being filled with truth, goodness, moisture, light and life… Feel the nourishment….

3. Gradually you feel a call in your heart to extend the light and fire. Where will they go?… What will they do?

Meditation #7: The Whitest of Flowers

From: The First Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

Edelweiss flower

I invite you to take a few slow breaths, noticing the air coming into and leaving your body. Notice also your mouth, relax your tongue and feel how it sits inside your mouth. Notice also your hands as they are placed in your lap. Then let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your heart.

“lmagine a very bright fire which is incomprehensible, inextinguishable, wholly living, and appearing as if it is totally alive. The flame of the fire is an airy color, and it is blazing violently in a gentle wind. This flame is inseparable from the fire, just as the entrails are to a person. And imagine this flame lighten in color and give forth a bolt of lightning. Behold, the air – round and of great size – suddenly rising up, and the flame sending sparks into the air, thereby leading the air to perfection. The air sparkles and is put in order, just as heaven and earth. After that, this flame sends forth some of its fire to a little clod of muddy earth which is lying on the ground. This flame makes this little clod warm so that a body and blood are brought forth. This flame breathes into this body and blood, and a person is brought forth. With this finished, the bright fire – blazing violently in a gentle wind – brings the whitest of flowers to this person. This flower hangs down from the flame just as the dew hangs down from the grass. The person does not smell the flower with his or her nose, nor taste it with his or her mouth, nor touch it with his or her hands.”

Questions:

1. Has the Divine ever sent “a lightning bolt” into your life? What was that like?

2. Imagine the whitest of flowers hanging down in front of you. What does it smell like? What does it taste like? Touch it with your hands. What does it feel like?

Meditation #6: The Crown of Light

From: The Sixth Vision of the First Part, Scivias

Crown found at the Relics Church in Eibingen, Germany

Crown found at the Relics Church in Eibingen, Germany

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Now, imagine a crown of light being placed on your head. Slowly, let the light of the crown enter your soul. Then let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your soul:

“Imagine two armies of heavenly spirits on high in the heavenly mysteries. They are shining very brightly. Those in the first army have wings on their shoulders, and they have faces that are like the faces of people. The looks on their faces appear as if they are pure water. Those in the other army also have wings on their shoulders, and they too have faces that are like the faces of people. The looks on their faces appear as if they are the image of the Word of God shining in a mirror. You are not able to detect any other form among either of these two armies. These two armies are surrounded by five other armies, arranged in a circle as if they are a crown. Those in the first of these other five armies have faces that are like the faces of people. They are shining brightly from their shoulders downwards. Those in the second of these other five armies are shining so brightly that you can not look at them. Those in the third army are as white as marble, and their heads are the same as those of people except that they have little burning torches coming from them. And they are covered from their shoulders downwards as if with a cloud made of iron. Those in the fourth army have the faces of people and the feet of people. They have helmets on their heads, and they are clothed with tunics that are the same as those with the white marble. And those in the fifth army are not like people at all, but they are as red as the dawn of the day. You can not, however, determine any other form in these.

All of these armies are surrounded by two additional armies, also arranged in a circle as if they are a crown. Those in the first of these last additional armies are full of eyes and wings. In each eye, a mirror appears; and in the mirror, the face of a person appears. Their wings are raised on high to the heaven’s. Those in the second of these last additional armies are burning as if they are a fire. They have a lot of wings. These wings reflect like mirrors, and they reflect all the distinguished orders of the institution of the church. You do not see any other form among these last two armies. But all of these armies are resounding with wondrous voices – accompanied with every type of music – all the miracles which God performed in the blessed souls. In this way, they are glorifying God magnificently.”

Questions:

1. How have you been helped by heavenly spirits?

2. Imagine a mirror appearing, and in the mirror you see your soul. Ask your soul, “What is yearning to be born in you?”
