Dear Viriditas Community,

Today is my parents’ 61st wedding anniversary. I marvel at their marriage. What a remarkable team they are. One of many things they have modeled for me is incredible strength and courage. They have birthed many spectacular creations over the years, not the least of which are their four children. With each birth I have seen how they kept nourishing their creations, and that no matter what obstacles they faced, THEY NEVER GAVE UP!

It is this kind of courage I see playing out with the birth of the Fox Institute. I want to share some photos with you of the new Fox Institute for Creation Spirituality in Boulder. This is where David and I will be team teaching our Introduction to Creation Spirituality Course in a few weeks.

#1. Fox Institute Banner by entrance.
#2. Entrance of the Fox Institute in the basement of the First Congregational Church on Pine Street in Boulder.
#3. Administrative offices in renovated church carriage house.

The Institute just hosted a free community gathering on January 15th in honor of Rev. Martin Luther King. It was a powerful event that included song, drumming, and poetry to honor MLK’s legacy and to imagine strong, healthy communities into the future. Please enjoy this inspirational video created by Fox Institute Pouria Montazeri for this event.

I’m also very excited to share with you that two additional classes have been added in May that I will be teaching at the Fox Institute in Boulder. The classes will be held from May 14th through May 18th. This is wonderful news for all of you Hildegard lovers!

The first class is a seminar entitled The Mystic Hildegard.  In this one, we will immerse ourselves in St. Hildegard’s creativity via St. Hildegard’sJourney through the Senses, an exhibit that shows the life and work of this powerful mystic. We’ll dive into the first biography written about St. Hildegard in the 12th century and touch on St. Hildegard’s theological writings/illuminations as well as her medical texts.  I’ll also make available some of St. Hildegard’s remedies for sampling. We’ll complete the class with an exploration of how we can use St. Hildegard as an inspiration in our own lives. (Image: St. Hildegard statue on the relics church in Eibingen Germany.)

The second class is entitled Engaging Hildegard’s Music, Art and Herbs and is an Art As Meditation offering. Through singing, guided imagery, movement, and meditation related to the life’s work of St. Hildegard, we’ll enter into a deep meditative state with this powerful saint. Through this doorway, we will access our deepest creative selves and express our souls in a variety of artistic mediums including watercolor painting, drawing, singing, movement, journaling and modeling.  We’ll share the creative process as well as our creations within class thus forming a community of creative powerhouses.

Did you know you can access the strength of your inner mystic? Curious about what a mystic is?  Wondering if you really are one?  Check out this week’s blog post: Are You a Mystic?

And if you are interested in exploring more about being a mystic, don’t forget to check out the class I am teaching in February on an Introduction to Creation Spirituality here.

How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras

Mantra practice continues to give me courage for my life. I was just writing a piece for the Healing Mantras guidebook and was remembering a time many years ago when I woke up in excruciating pain in my pelvic area.  While at the doctor’s office, feeling fearful about the pain I may experience undergoing a pelvic exam, the Saraswati chant “Om Aim Saraswatyai Namaha” came to my mind.  I began to chant it in my head silently. I felt my body relax and an inner knowing that all will be well washed over and through me.

You’ll be able to find out more about this mantra and the chakra that it helps to heal in my guidebook.  It will be coming soon – in February!

In closing I remind us all that the word courage comes from the French word courage which is a composite of two French words: coeur (which means heart) and large (which means large). May we all, like my parents, live our lives with large hearts!

Dear Viriditas Community,

How I love writing to all of you each week! I hope you are enjoying this new weekly rhythm as much as I am….

This week I want to focus on CREATIVITY. What are your plans for nourishing your creative self in this new year of 2018?  What new ideas or forms are bubbling up within and waiting for you to express them?

Creative expression puts us in touch with our inner core.  A part of the Divine flow. It’s enlivening and invigorating. And brings to us a possibility for self healing.

Creativity is the breath of life.

As you all know, one way I like to engage in creative expression is through music. I have posted a video of a recent performance of the marimba band KUTANDARA that I am a part of on the doctorofthesoul website. We were part of the 1st Annual Martin Luther King Talent Show of Boulder last Monday night. The Talent Show was held at the Avalon Ballroom and was a fundraiser for the I Have A Dream Foundation. It was a heart warming evening. I encourage you to watch the video. As you listen, ask yourself the question: How am I called to nourish my creative self?! Click here  to access the video.

We are all artists, capable of creating something new in a moment of inspiration and imagination. Through this, we can connect more closely with the Divine, and the Divine in each other.

Check out this week’s blog post on how to Discover the Artist Within.

And if you are interested in exploring your own creative expression as an artist, find out more about the class I am teaching in February here.

Healing through the Chanting of Mantras

I continue to be in my creative flow as I develop my mantra practice. The mantras used for chanting in healing are precise instruments that support us in connecting with the Divine, often through the doorway of the attributes or energetic force of a Hindu god or goddess. This is possible for anyone to do, with or without any belief in religion.

Saraswati, the Goddess of Wisdom and Music
Through the power of sound within the mantra, chanting as a spiritual practice leads us closer to our Higher Self, dissolves obstacles in life, and brings compassion and peace into the world. Making you be the best self you can be in your life.

As you continue forward with your practice of mantra chanting, you do want to eventually dissolve the image of the Hindu god or goddess used in the practice. This will facilitate the power of the mantra to come forth through the sound. Then you can enter into a deeper place of stillness where transformation can arise.

As a spiritual explorer, are you looking for a way to deepen your spiritual practice so that you can be even more effective in your work in the world? So you can be your best self and make a positive difference in the world?

If so you may find my guidebook on How to Bring Life to your Chakras helpful. It will be available soon. It is a simple, step-by-step guide that will support you in deepening your practice in balancing your chakras through mantra chanting. It’s engaging, effective, and even fun! Easy to do in only take 10-15 minutes of your time each day. I’ll update you as soon as it becomes available.

All right dear ones… I close with this quote from St. Hildegard of Bingen:

“Humankind, full of all creative possibilities, is God’s work. Humankind alone is called to assist God. Humankind is called to co-create. With nature’s help, humankind can set into creation all that is necessary and life-sustaining.”
I would love to hear about how you are nourishing your creativity in 2018!

Dear Viriditas Community,

New Year Greetings to you!  I hope you had a joyful and rejuvenating holiday season.

I returned home from my holiday travels to continue my preparations for my class: The Essence of Creation Spirituality  starting on Feb. 26th. David and I are thrilled to be team teaching this class for the first time at the new Fox Institute for Creation Spirituality in Boulder. This course is a framework for living that dives into an exploration of the sacredness of the universe, the wisdom of science, the passion of creativity and the power of social change.

(This book is on the required reading list for our February class.)

Click here to watch the video to learn more about the class. In this video you will not only find out about our class, you will also hear what happened when David and I first met many years ago on the Berkeley Pier in California!

At the Fox Institute David and I are part of a phenomenal group of faculty. Truly this group of spiritual teachers is breathtaking. Find out more about who is behind this powerful education here.

Did you hear about the bomb cyclone on the east coast?  Maybe experience it? I did!
What a name, right?  Makes you anxious just hearing that.

I was on my way traveling to New York City from the Swiss Alps when the bomb cyclone decided to direct its brutally frigid path to the east coast, bringing biting winds and blinding snow.  My flight was cancelled. Plans unexpectedly halted.  Disappointment and upset swirled about in the air. Fear and anxiety of the unknown.  What destruction will occur?  What devastation?  When will it end?

In the midst of the chaos, I gathered my strength to return to my center and ground myself.  I tapped in to the depth of my own spiritual practice for support.  What comfort I found, with warm, embracing arms of this inner work to help me through my current challenge.

Although this bomb cyclone was an incredible snowstorm on the east coast during this holiday season, I know we all experience bomb cyclones within our lives that have the potential to throw us off track, tear us down, disappoint and make us anxious.  For this is life on this beautiful planet Earth at this time.

How do we navigate through this?  And come out healthy and strong?  Still growing and reaching to become the best self we can become? The course that David and I are teaching in February will offer helpful tools – tools to help you remain calm, strong and hopeful even in the midst of the bomb cyclones within your life – whatever they may be.

This course will teach you how to open your heart, how to communicate and connect with others, and how to navigate through those experiences that have the potential to throw you off track.

Needing a Little Help to Navigate your Days in the Time of Bomb Cyclones and False Ballistic Missile Alarms?

Check out the blog post for an intro to one tool.  Explore the rich and colorful tapestry of the four threads of our inner work as we navigate the bomb cyclones in our lives.

How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras

I hope you were able to make use of the Holiday Gift that I sent a few weeks ago to support you in taking care of yourself through the holiday season.  It was so exciting to launch this introduction to How to Bring Life to Your Chakras: 7 Healing Mantras as a holiday gift!  If you missed it, you can still access it HERE.

The rest of the guidebook with engaging stories and specific recommendations along with gorgeous audio recordings of the mantras will be available in February.  A perfect spiritual practice to support and nourish you in the challenges of daily life. Truly helpful.  I would love to hear any questions or comments you have about the holiday gift material.

For now, I will close with one of my favorite lines from the Introduction of Original Blessing by Matthew Fox.

“When I use the word “wisdom”, I think of the definition that the Native American tradition gives us: that the people may live. I am very at home with this understanding of wisdom. I believe it encompasses the breath and depth of cosmic and human living, and I believe it names what God the Creator wants for all of her children: that the people of this precious Earth, all  global peoples, may live. Bangladesh people, old people, hungry children people, robust adolescent people, people in socialist countries, people in capitalist countries – that the people may live.”

Join me and David at the Fox Institute in February and experience what it means to really live!

In Viriditas,

PS  Don’t forget you have access to the audios for the Healing with Mantra for all 7 chakras in my Free Healing Library.  A brief recap of each chakra can be found here to support you in your practice at home.
