Viriditas Newsletter, July

Dear Viriditas Community,

I hope you have been enjoying the lazy, hazy days of summer and that you had a relaxing and fun July fourth holiday weekend. In recent weeks I have been spending time at the pool with a fruit smoothie working on my suntan! JGA at pool I have also been with the help of my iPad working on the summer blog series, St. Hildegard’s Medicine. I have discovered a wonderful book called “From Saint Hildegard’s Kitchen, Foods of Health, Foods of Joy by Jany Fournier-Rosset.
St. Hildegard's Kitchen coverIn recent weeks I have been experimenting with St. Hildegard’s dietary advice. It has been very nourishing for me on many levels. No matter how much I learn about the grain spelt from St. Hildegard I always find myself invigorated and peaceful trying a new spelt recipe. This week I took some catfish and coated it in a mixture of spelt, fresh thyme, oregano and parsley from the garden as well as ground cumin and cayenne. Needless to say there weren’t any leftovers! I encourage you to follow the blog and try some of the recipes I’ll be sharing. As always, I love to hear your impressions. (Click here to read the blog series.)

David and I launched our July 4th celebration with our Tap Into Transformation on July 3rd. The theme was “Standing Your Ground,” and David created choreography to go with the gospel house music of Kenny Bobien’s, “I Shall Not Be Moved.” Here are some of the lyrics to the song which are based on Psalm I. “I shall not be moved, like a tree standing by the water.” (Click here to view the promo video.)

As I watched the tap dancers with their feet firmly rooted in the ground and their arms majestically stretched towards the sky, I felt once again how much beauty and strength we human beings can receive when we connect to the natural world.

After a yummy meal catered by Moe’s BBQ, the group created a mural with images of things that prevent us from standing our ground as well as those things that help us stand our ground.  After we drew the mural people shared about their drawings.

Here are some of the things that were mentioned that prevent us from standing our ground: fear, doubt, insensitivity, isolation, procrastination, the “flood”, hopelessness, bad angels, guilt.

Here are some things that help us stand our ground: Believing in ourselves, wings, truth, finding a way into the light, singing, faith, integrity, angels, U-hauls, spiritual community.

What makes it hard for you to stand your ground?
What helps you to stand your ground?

Once again at the end of the evening when David and I sat on the couch and looked into each other’s eyes I thought, “It doesn’t get any better than this!” I hope if you’ve never had the opportunity to attend a Tap Into Transformation that you will consider joining us this August 7th. The theme will be “We’re On Each Other’s Team. We always have one or two newcomers each month so don’t be shy or think you have to have lots of experience with tap dancing to join us!

In closing, look at the image of the baby Elephant as it stands it’s ground.

Now, look at the Viriditas logo and find the Elephant in the letter “D.” Viriditas logo

I have been collecting Elephants my whole life and have learned a lot about standing my ground from the Elephant. The Elephant is the largest living land mammal. In India and southeast Asia Elephants are venerated. It is a symbol of royalty and fertility. The Hindu god of wisdom and success, Ganesha, is usually depicted with an Elephant’s head. In his book “Animal Speak” Ted Andrews writes: “One of the most outstanding features of the Elephant is its trunk. Because the Elephant has relatively poor eyesight, it relies heavily upon its sense of smell. It breathes smells in through the trunk and discerns from the smells. The sense of smell is a long time symbol for higher forms of discrimination. Those with an Elephant totem should pay attention to what smells good and what smells bad. Are you not discriminating as you should? Are others? Does something smell funny? Are you not responding, even though things don’t smell right?

There are so many wonderful smells to be appreciated at this time of the year. Get outside and smell the roses or whatever glorious smells you find out in the natural world. Two of my favorites: mint and fresh tomato vines!

St. Hildegard of Bingen’s “Good Food’s”

(Excerpts from Hildegard of Bingen’s Medicine by Dr. Wighard Strehlow & Gottfried Hertzka)

“The simplicity of the Hildegard diet does not require measuring the complicated data of calorie charts, vitamin tables, fat percentages, or fiber content. This simple diet is totally complete. Supplementation through additional vitamin or mineral pills is not only unnecessary, but is not recommended. Hildegard’s frugal diet contains fresh vegetables and fruits in season, preferably grown in the immediate area. Instead of an overabundance of various foods from exotic lands, and the cultivation of gourmet tastes, Hildegard advocates a plain diet which can nevertheless be delicious and healthful.

The characteristic, important, and fundamental substance of a food is its essence (essential), its subtility. For the Hildegard diet, this is the scale which weighs and selects the foods. On the basis of subtility we can select “good” foods from the various food families for our diet. All things 100-percent “good” have health-promoting, health-sustaining, revujenating, and vitalizing qualities as a part of their fundamental nature.

1. What fresh vegetables and fruits are currently growing in your immediate area?
2. Do you have a local farmer’s market? Check it out!

A Proper Diagnosis According to St. Hildegard

(Excerpts from Hildegard of Bingen’s Medicine by Dr. Wighard Strehlow & Gottfried Hertzka)

Physica: St. Hildegard’s Book of Healing Methods

Physica: St. Hildegard’s Book of Healing Methods

“According to Hildegard, there are not 6000 illnesses, as the modern medicine of today would have us believe. This diagnostic chaos is resolved in a clearly understandable basic principle in the medicine of Hildegard. In the process, one can look for guidance to the developmental history of a human being, just as modern science does. The three germinal layers from which the human body develops (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm) form the basis for three large categories of illness:

Ectodermal Illnesses

The illnesses of the outer germinal layer have to do with the segmental structure of the body and the nervous system, that is, roughly within the skin. After all, the skin is a sense organ with many receptors which transmit a multitude of messages to the nervous system: sensations of temperature, pain, touch, and pressure. These illnesses affect the organs and are listed by Hildegard from head to toe: head, eyes, ears, teeth, heart, lungs, liver, spleen, stomach, kidneys, abdomen, sexual organs, gout of the big toe. These localized illnesses are inherited illnesses, with the typical weak points (Achilles heel) which a person brings into the world. They range from the scalp to the big toe. There is a specific treatment for each of these organs enumerated.

Mesodermal Illnesses

The mesomorphic illnesses of the middle germinal layers have to do with the connective tissue and the vessels. They are principally rheumatic and degenerative illnesses, colds, and the illnesses connected with elimination.

Endodermal Illnesses

The so-called serious internal illnesses, such as cancer, jaundice, dropsy, and intestinal illnesses, can be traced to the inner germinal layer, with a systematic listing of about forty types of illness. These internal ailments are largely connected with disturbances of the stomach and intestines, and can in part appear as eruptions of the skin. Likewise skin ailments can be projected onto the intestines.

  1. Do you have any illnesses which you feel you have inherited?
  2. What is your Achilles heel?
