Meditation #12: The Flame Of Inestimable Brightness

From: The Sixth Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

blog #12 image

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Light a candle. Gaze at the candle light, taking in the warmth and beauty of the fire. Close your eyes and let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your inner most being.

“You see the Word of God hanging on the cross. You also see a woman of great size shining as brightly as the wisdom which comes out of an ancient council – being led through divine power to the Word of God. Raising herself upwards, she is poured over with the blood from the side of the Word. For she is happily betrothed to the Word through the will of God, and she is nobly endowed with the body and blood of the Word

And you hear a heavenly voice speak to you:

Let my Word be a bride to you for the restoration of my people. You may be their mother, regenerating their souls through the salvation of the spirit and water.

And when this woman is strengthened in her powers, you see, as it were, an altar which she frequently approaches. She returns her dowry to the altar, showing it humbly to God and the angels. You see a priest, clothed in holy garments, approach the altar for celebrating the Eucharist. When he does, a great light of peace comes down from heaven, together with some angels, and shines around the altar. This light remains there until the completion of the Eucharist when the priest withdraws from the altar…While the priest was singing the praise of the all-powerful God – holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts – and was thus beginning the mysteries of the Eucharist, a flame of inestimable brightness suddenly descends from the opened heaven upon the offering. It surrounds the offering completely with its brightness, just as the sun makes things light with its rays. And while the flame radiates around the offering in this way, the flame bears the offering upwards invisible to the secrets of heaven. Then the flame sends the offering back downwards to the altar again, just as a person draws a breath inwards and then sends it outwards again.”

Questions

1. Imagine the woman of great size placing you on the altar. Feel the great light of peace coming down from heaven. It surrounds you completely with its brightness. Then feel a flame of inestimable brightness suddenly descending upon you. Flames are radiating around you and they then are bearing you upwards to the secrets of heaven. Then feel the flames sending you back downwards to the altar again. Feel the transformation that has taken place inside your being.

Meditation # 11: Mother Wisdom

From: The Fifth Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

meditation #11 purple flowers

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Let your entire being become relaxed. Close your eyes and let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your inner most being:

“Imagine a woman of great size. Then imagine a bright light which is as white as snow and as transparent as crystal. The light makes the woman bright from her head down to her throat. From her throat down to her navel, another light of reddish color surrounds her. From her throat down to her breasts, she glows with a reddish color that is similar to the dawn. From her breasts down to her navel, she shines with a color that is similar to a purple hyacinth. Where she glows with the reddish color, she reflects that light upwards to the mysteries of heaven. And on the reddish color, there is a most beautiful maiden whose head is uncovered, showing her black hair. This maiden is clothed with a red tunic which flows down to her feet.

And you hear a heavenly voice speak: This flower on the heavenly Sion is the mother and flower of roses and the lily of the valleys. O flower, you will be betrothed to the son of the most powerful king. You will bear the most celebrated of offsprings, and you will be comforted at the proper time.”

Questions:

1. Become one with the most beautiful maiden. Feel the depth of the strength and wisdom of the great woman fill your entire being. Are there any challenges you are facing in your present life? The great woman is filling you with her compassion and peace. Feel the comfort of being held by her.

2. As you settle into this deep sense of peace, connect with your inner most being. What truth is there to be found in the depth of your soul? Let it bubble up. Offer this truth to the great woman with gratitude.

Viriditas Newsletter, April

Dear Viriditas Community,

April showers bring May flowers! At our April Tap Into Transformation we sang and danced in the rain. Twelve fearless tap dancers let themselves be put through the paces by David who created a tap dance inspired by Gene Kelly’s performance in the movie “Singing In The Rain.” I learned the dance and felt like Debbie Reynolds the morning we filmed it in the Viriditas Studio. Click here to view the video.  What was especially fun this month is that we also learned the song to the dance. Here are the lyrics:

Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo…

I’m singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feelin’
I’m happy again
I’m laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun’s in my heart
And I’m ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I’ve a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singin’,
Singin’ in the rain.

After a delicious meal catered by Panera Bread, David asked the group the question, “What do you do when the storms of your life hit?” Here are some of the answers: Tap dance, sing, connect to nature and cook!

Four newcomers came this month and they all dove right in! We had a surprise visit midway through the evening by some participants in the North Boulder Open Studios Tour night. At this point in the evening the group had already learned the dance, and I wish you could have seen our visitors’ awestruck faces as they watched our group dance. Who knows, the visitors might be back next month!

Continuing on the theme of April showers, the healing words of St. Hildegard of Bingen have been showering down upon the ears of those who have been receiving the weekly meditation series. The meditations based on St. Hildegard’s illuminations in the first part of Scivias. are now available for purchase on my website. Click here to purchase.

The Joy Collaborative Project has come to a close and water is at the heart of the final song. I encourage you to visit the website and listen to “The Singing Wells of Borana.” Click here to visit the site and then scroll down to the song.

The Borana are a semi-nomadic people in southern Ethiopia. For hundreds of years life has hinged on finding water under the surface of the earth during the dry season. The wells of the Borana people are dug by hand and can be as deep as ninety feet. As they bring the water up in buckets the men sing. David created a piece of music to accompany their song. It was very moving for me to sing this song with David and these beautiful African people. Take a listen!

Last but not least, for those of you in the area another opportunity to hear my marimba band Titandare play is coming up. Join us Saturday, April 25 from 5:30-9 pm for our Spring Community Concert benefitting Legacy of Learning, a local non-profit empowering youth of promise through education. It will be held at the Boulder Mennonite Church at 3910 Table Mesa Dr. Come for a night of food, music, dancing…and Legacy of Learning’s legendary silent auction. $10/$20 family suggested donation at the door.

I’m excited to perform our more expansive arrangements to some of our favorite pieces as well as a brand new song for our band. I hope to see you there dancing along with the “singing wood!”

Meditation #10: The Tower of Strength

From: The Fourth Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

nice_emeralds

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Connect with the ground under you. Close your eyes. Now, let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your entire being.

“Imagine a large round tower which is built completely out of white stone. It has three windows near its top, and from these three windows such a bright light pours out that even the cone-shaped roof of the tower can be seen more clearly in the light. The three windows are decorated around their outside with beautiful emeralds. The tower is located straight behind you, similar to the way a tower is placed in the wall of a city. You can not be destroyed in any way because of its strength.”

Question:

1. What is it in your life that you need strength for? Imagine holding two large emeralds in each of your hands. All the green of nature is concentrated within the emerald. The power of the emerald is yours as well. Breathe in the strength of the tower behind you. Feel the light pouring out of each of the three windows flowing into your body and your soul. Know that whatever you are in the midst of, the strength of the tower is with you. You are filled with light.

Meditation #9: The Queen of Peace

From: The Third Vision of the Second Part, Scivias

meditation #9 candle

I invite you to get comfortable in front of your altar and to take a few deep and slow breaths. Then light a candle. Breathe in the peace of the candle light and let your gaze slowly take in each sacred object you have placed on your altar. Close your eyes and let the following words from St. Hildegard of Bingen speak to your heart and mind.

“Imagine you are a woman of great size – just like a great city. You have your head crowned wondrously, and your arms are covered with the long sleeves of a tunic which glistens from heaven right down to the earth. Your womb is full of holes, much like a net, and a great crowd of people are moving about in it. You do not have any legs or feet which can be seen because you are standing in front of an altar which is before the eyes of God. You have your hands stretched out around the altar, and you are looking most keenly throughout the heavens with your eyes. You can not look at your garment closely, except that you notice that it shines with a very bright peacefulness. Your breasts are surrounded with such splendor that they shine as a reddish dawn full of reddish lightning. And you hear various kinds of music being sung ‘as intensely as the reddish dawn’.

You spread out your splendor as if it is a garment, and you say: “It behooves me to take in and to provide for.” And then as if in a flash of lightning, a multitude of angels run to you. The angels perfect you by making various seats and steps on you for people to sit on.

Next you see some black infants near the earth, but in the air. They are like fish swimming in the water. These infants enter your womb through the many holes that are in it. You then sigh, drawing the infants up to your head where you breathe them forth through your mouth, remaining pure in the process. Then a peaceful light appears to you. This peaceful light takes the black skin from each of the infants and throws that skin beyond life. You then uncover the peaceful light for these infants and cover them with a white garment.”

Question:

1. What or who are the black infants in your life? Name each one of them out loud. Write their names on little pieces of paper and put the papers in a little bowl on your altar. Circle the bowl with your candle of peace and cover the bowl with a white cloth.
