Viriditas Newsletter, December

Dear Viriditas Community,

I would like to dedicate this final newsletter of the year to the theme of Serenity. Here is my favorite reading about Serenity that I have been meditating on for years.

“Serenity is…

…a way of life absorbed slowly and practiced one day at a time…perspective…becoming aware of and accepting my many characteristics and not judging what’s “bad” or “good” but what’s useful to keep and what to release… a spiritual journey without a destination…the space between the impulse and the action…accepting what is…honoring my feelings without aiming them at someone else or letting them run my life…a gift I choose to give to myself…knowing that what works for someone else may not necessarily work for me…knowing that what works for me may change from moment to moment…understanding I may be powerless, but I’m not helpless…realizing God does for me what I cannot do for myself…minding my own business…the comfort of knowing I can hold my own hand…balance and relief from black-and-white thinking…understanding that reacting to life and responding to life are not the same thing…deliberate realignment with God…feeling at peace with my past…a matter of internal stability…becoming a complete being with my body and mind in one place at the same time…becoming one with God.”– Anonymous

Meditation is the most effective tool I know to bring serenity to my life.  And since images speak louder than words I would like to share a photo of a statue I came across at a local Boulder shop, Sturtz & Copeland.

There are many ways to access Serenity. Meditation, prayer, writing, painting, drawing or quiet contemplation, running, walking, even washing the dishes. And then there is yodeling where I literally feel like I become as serene as an Alp!

Swiss_Alps

Did you catch that?!  I said as serene as AN ALP!  That’s exactly what happened at the last Tap Into Transformation.  David, I and our thirteen participants became the Alps, sang like the Alps, and to help it all along we even enjoyed Swiss cheese fondue.

In order for this to happen I taught our group a Swiss yodel that I have sung since I was five. Once the group had learned the yodel I asked them to lie down on the dance floor and practice one of my favorite meditations taught by Thích Nhất Hạnh. On the in breath I invited them to think “mountain.”  On the out breath I invited them to think “solid.” After a few minutes of this practice we sang the yodel they had just learned with me. Ah, the serenity that filled the Viriditas Studio!

The first part of our evening had that sweet quality of Serenity that brings a smile to your face.  The theme of our event was “Warmth.” We used a recording of a Gordon Lightfoot song with lyrics written and sung by our own Jim Gibson. (Click here to view the video) Yes, you heard right, Jim sang Bundled Up People! For any of you who were there, Jim said he would be happy to send you his recording. Just let me know, and I will contact Jim. At the end of the evening, after our yodel, everyone stood up all bundled up in their winter attire, and we danced the dance arm in arm in a circle.

To experience the deep relaxation of Serenity, I would like to invite you to visit The Joy Collaborative website and experience the most recently posted song, We Are The Ones written by Gary Grundei. In this composition Gary converted the polyrhythm (permutations of 2 against 3) of the pygmy peoples of central Africa with music specifically created to enhance bilateral stimulation. When I listened to Gary’s composition with closed eyes and headphones I experienced a deep state of relaxation and went on a Shamanic journey where I experienced a profound sense of peace and a whole series of healing images.  Read Gary’s description that accompanies his recording, slip on some headphones, close your eyes, and treat yourself to this listening experience. I invite you to share with me what happens for you. Click here to visit the site.

In closing I would like to celebrate with you the completion of my translation of the first book of the very first biography that was ever written about St. Hildegard by the monks Gottfried and Theoderich. Taking the time to translate their work from German to English has reconnected me to St. Hildegard giving me new insights into her strength and profound faith.  For those of you who would like to enjoy this translation please click here to visit my blog. It is my Christmas present to you!

That she possessed a wonderful and rare kind of visionary gift and put her heart and soul into the worldly as well as the contemplative life.

This blessed Virgin was, as we can tell from her own words, gifted with a truly wonderful and very rare visionary gift. Just like the holy living beings that Ezekiel saw, she walked forwards like a winged creature and did not turn away. And she continued on and did not turn back. For she did not turn away from the active life that she had chosen to something of lesser value. Not being able to hold on to the visionary life she was physically bound to, she returned to her active life. It was as if God had said to her regarding her active life: “I will not leave you alone, nor forsake you.” He did not allow her to move away from her good intentions. Instead, He let her go from the sight of His incomprehensible majesty back to the hardship of her active life. It was as if He had said to her, “Turn away your eyes, for they draw Me in, and you are not able in this life to understand Me completely.” Hence the psalmist says: “Man raises his heart to high things, but God shows himself as superior.” Because the higher you aim with a pure heart, the more you realize how incomprehensible He is. And so it was that the blessed Virgin experienced the hardship of her daily life while at the same time she reached through her life as a visionary towards the inaccessible Divine Light.

And here we put an end to the first book and want to praise the Lord, who looked down on his chosen servant at birth and has raised her, His loved one, up to the glory of His Visions.

That she underwent the hardships of the worldly life, but gave her life as a visionary preference; and what she wrote about her visions to the monk Wiber of Gembloux.

But I want to go back to the sequence of the story. Even though Saint Hildegard often suffered the birthing pains of Lia, she stayed close to Rachel by focusing on the light of her inner visions. She spread what she saw in these visions to the best of her ability through speech and writing. This type of visionary experience is only rarely seen even in the greatest of saints, as long as they abide in the shadow of mortality. This is why something must be said here about this. One can best learn about her experience as visionary by taking in her own words, as far as she could write about it herself. The monk Guibert of Gembloux had written a letter to Saint Hildegard asking her to elaborate on what he had heard about her visionary experience. In her response to him she wrote the following:

“God works where He wants to honor His name and not to bring glory to man. But I am constantly filled with trembling fear. For I do not recognize any security of skill in myself. And yet, I stretch my hands up to God so that I am held by Him like a feather that is without any weight being blown back and forth by the wind. What I see, I can not fully know as long as I am at the service of the body as well as the invisible soul because with both of them there is a deficiency in humans.

Starting in my childhood, when my bones, nerves and veins had not yet been strengthened, up until now in my seventieth year, I have rejoiced in my soul because of this visionary gift. In my visions my soul rises, as God wants, high up into the sky and in the different spheres, staying among different people, even though they are in distant lands and places. And because I see the visions this way in my soul, I behold the change of clouds and other creatures.

But I do not observe the visions with my outward eyes and do not hear them with my outward ears, nor do I take them in with the thoughts of my heart nor by any use of my five senses. I witness them in my soul alone while my outward eyes are open. So I have never suffered from going unconscious with ecstasy in the visions, but I see them wide awake, day and night.”
