The Suffering of St. Hildegard. / Das Leiden der Heiligen Hildegard.

She fell ill every time she hesitated to execute the instructions of the Divine Vision.

Hildegard hadn’t been able to walk for a long time when it was decided by both sides that they would let Hildegard and her sisters go to the place that Hildegard has foreseen through Spirit. The Abbot then went to the seriously ill Hildegard and told her to get up in the name of the Lord and to move to the place that was destined for her by Heaven. As soon as the Abbot said these words, Hildegard rose up quickly as if during all that time she had never suffered any weakness. All present were amazed and full of admiration. And most rightly so. For all the things that were happening around Hildegard were astonishing. Ever since Hildegard has been told by the Divine to move to Rupertsberg, she always experienced relief of her physical suffering, when events developed favorably. And vice versa: if her efforts seemed to fail due to the objection of her opponents, she suffered greater discomfort, even if she had not been present. Sometimes Hildegard would suddenly rise from her bed and walk through every corner of the hermitage  unable to speak any more; and then when she returned to her bed, she was unable to walk, but spoke as before. It wasn’t only at that time that she suffered from this kind of illness. She always experienced this kind of suffering whenever, due to feminine fear or doubt, she hesitated to carry out the will of God.

What is the meaning of the suffering in your life?

Viriditas Newsletter, September

Dear Viriditas Community,

This month I’d like to discuss the topic of inspiration.  Inspiration is “the stimulation or arousal of the mind and feelings to a special activity”. To be inspired is to be “blown into, inflamed or filled with Spirit”.  The word originated in the thirteen hundreds and meant “an immediate influence of God”.

What makes you feel inspired, full of life or fired up?  What breathes into your Soul these days?

The inspiration for this month’s Tap Into Transformation was Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.  David and I watched some of their movies and delighted in their elegance, athleticism, and capacity to be in sync with each other.  We created a short video to the music of Chattanooga Choo Choo as performed by the Glen Miller Band as a prelude to our evening. Our theme was Classy & Sassy.  Click on the photo to view the video. JGA-DS_Tap_Sept

As our group learned how to turn like Ginger and Fred, the liveliness, smiles and yes, elegance of the tap dancers was a sight to behold!

During the second half of the evening we asked the group to tap into their own life force to come up with 10 words that inspired them.  We then paired off and created a Sharpette® to one of the words.  Here are two examples:

Halloween
A time for ghosts; children seek treats,
Like a thriller video with Vincent Price.

Sight
Seeing the world; taking in life,
Like Helen Keller’s hands on the face of a saint.

On the African music front, Gary Grundei, David Sharp and I have decided to take the inspiration we received from our Africa research these past few years to create music.  The_Joy_Collaborative_logoWe are creating a website from where the songs will be streamed.  I will let you know when the first song is available.  It is our hope to complete quite a few songs by the end of March 2015.  Get ready to be inspired by Africa!

The answer to the African song challenge last month was the Nambian Youth Choir.  This month will be the last African music challenge.  Watch this video and tell me which country these singers are from and why they are singing.

Once again a special gift will be sent to the first person who correctly answers the questions. Please email me your answers to info@viriditasllc.com and include your mailing address.

My last piece of news is that I am currently preparing to take the St. Hildegard Exhibit to the Messiah Community Church in Denver at the beginning of October.  As always, St. Hildegard is inspiring me.  I feel her strength, her unwavering devotion and total reliance on the Divine more deeply than ever.  Please join me on Saturday, October 4th at 5 pm for the vernisage of the St. Hildegard Exhibit. (Messiah Community Church: 1750 Colorado Blvd., Denver, CO 80220)

David and I will both be there to launch the St. Hildegard week of events.  I will also be delivering the sermon at the worship service on Sunday at 9:30 am.  The entire worship service will be done St. Hildegard style so yes, there will be singing and tap dancing.

The Exhibit will be on display at the church during the week and open to the public every evening.  In addition I will be giving two lectures; one on Sunday evening and another Tuesday night. Click here for the flyer and all the details so you can mark your calendars and invite your friends. St. Hildegard is coming to the Messiah Community Church! This will be a beautiful and yes inspiring event! I hope to see you there.

In closing I would like to leave you with these inspiring words from St. Hildegard. I invite you to read them slowly and take them deeply into your heart asking yourself, “What longing do I have in my heart of hearts?”

Truly,
The Holy Spirit is an unquenchable fire.

He bestows all excellence,
      sparks all worth,
      awakes all goodness,
       ignites speech,
       enflames humankind.

Yet in this radiance is a restorative
                 stillness.
It is the stillness that is similarly
In the will to good.
It spreads to all sides.
– St. Hildegard of Bingen

God works in mysterious ways.

Hildegard, for whom this home was to be built, fell ill because of the tardiness in fulfilling the Divine Vision. Her feet completely failed her, and she could not be moved from her bed, where she lay like a rock. And since the Abbot did not believe those who talked about it, he decided to see her for himself in order to be convinced. After the Abbot unsuccessfully tried with all his might to lift up her head or to turn her on to her other side, he realized, stunned by such an unusual sign, that this was not a case of human suffering, but instead was about Divine punishment. He realized that he should no longer go against the Divine instruction, unless he wanted to suffer something worse himself.

However, since the location partly belonged to the Canons of Mainz and the land with the chapel of St. Rupert belonged to Count Bernhard of Hildesheim, a mediation was held by a delegation of faithful people, and the Virgin of God received, as she had foreseen, permission to live there for herself and her sisters.

Hildegard leaves Dissibodenberg with her sisters./ Hildegard verlässt Dissibodenberg mit ihren Schwestern.
