CREATIVITY is the theme for our first Tap Into Transformation of the New Year!

Creativity is part of our heritage as created beings. The divine expressed creativity when life itself was manifested. We are privileged to do the same… to create life from our own, whether it is our everyday goings on or music, dance, art works, or any other unique thing that is part of who we are individually and as a community.

What is waiting for you to dive into it?  What are you yearning to dive into? When do you feel truly creative? What is the most creative thing you have done? We invite you to help us celebrate the creativity inside us all.

Come and be part of a dynamic community that tap dances together, sings together, dines together, and this month will dive into creativity and spark imagination.

Join husband and wife duo Dr. Jeannine Goode-Allen and Dr. David Sharp in an evening of transformational song, poetry and tap dancing in our gorgeous and inspiring Viriditas Studio in North Boulder. You will laugh, smile and stomp your feet while feeling the joy of moving your body and opening your heart to awe, wonder, beauty, gratitude and more.

St. Hildegard’s Advent Meditation Series, part III.

This is the final meditation in St. Hildegard’s Advent Meditation Series.

O Holy Spirit,
Fiery Comforter Spirit
Life of the life of all creatures,

Holy are you,
you that give existence
to all form.

Holy are you,
you that are balm for the
mortally wounded.

Holy are you,
you that cleanse deep hurt.

Fire of love,
breath of all holiness,
you are so delicious to our hearts.

You infuse our hearts deeply with
the good smell of virtue.
– St. Hildegard of Bingen

Viriditas Newsletter, December

Dear Viriditas Community,

I trust this newsletter finds you staying warm and enjoying the beauty of the holiday season. This month I would like to tell you about some of the beautiful things that are happening in my life these days. I do feel that it is essential for me to focus on beauty… all the time… yes, I mean daily!

Our December Tap Into Transformation theme was “Connection” and the evening was indeed a beautiful one. One of the things I am enjoying as the event evolves is the creative input that is now coming from some of our participants. The warm up music we used this month was sent to us by my college friend Larry Burnett who attended our October event when he “happened” to be in Denver on a business trip. He sent it all the way from Patagonia in the form of a You Tube video clip. The song he sent is called Safe & Sound by Capital Cities. You can check it out yourself by clicking here. Feel free to dance along!  If it were up to Larry this song would be our national anthem!  As far as I’m concerned the Tap Dancers in the Viriditas Studio on December 6th were just as enthusiastic, beautiful and talented as the dancers in the video! As Gary Grundei and I played the Who song, Getting In Tune on the newly retuned Steinway, I especially enjoyed how the group took the steps of the warm up and with David’s assistance danced them in a circle dance.

Another beautiful component of our December Tap Into Transformation was the continuation of our journey with David’s Sharpettes. David and one of our participants Jim Gibson co-created a special Sharpette for the evening’s theme of “Connection.” Here it is!

Connection
Point of contact; deep belonging.
Like the reflection of Yourself in a pool.

After enjoying a savory meal highlighted by a box of Swiss chocolates (yes the box was beautiful!), Gary and Jeannine modeled what connection can be when four hands tickle the piano keys at the same time. One of our participants gave us our first standing ovation after we completed Rachmaninoff’s piano duet Valse.

In this field of inspiration the group then dove into Crayola crayons and paper to create beautiful artwork in response to the following questions:

What do you want to connect to?
Who do you want to connect with?
What is calling you?

Everyone left with a little box which contained their artwork.  They will place the boxes under their Christmas trees or a sacred plant in their home and open them on Christmas morning.

Hugs were plentiful as we departed into the bitter cold night with Jim Gibson (he was on a roll that night!) composing a song out loud which he entitled “Bundled Up People!”

If you really want to open up to the creativity and beauty inside you, consider coming to the Tap Into Power For Life workshop David and I are giving on March 21-23rd. This workshop will be a personal and intimate journey as David and I reveal how tap dancing has been an amazing source of happiness and healing in our own lives. With basic tap steps as our language, we will journey into our hearts, souls, and minds to see what is in there to be talked about; to be stomped and stepped, tapped and touched…acknowledged and even transformed! We will sing and shout with our feet. We will become a joyous toe-tapping, foot stomping community! Oh yeah!  To learn more and register click here.

To me these days there is nothing more beautiful than a marimba. I love smearing oil on the big wooden keys to keep them moist. The beauty of the wood nourishes my soul. On January 12th our Marimba band: Knob Mentality will be playing for a special concert benefiting Tariro, a grassroots non-profit working in Zimbabwe to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS by educating young women and girls. The concert will be an afternoon of upbeat family friendly music and dancing, and I am greatly looking forward to it. Knob Mentality will be playing five songs. Yup, we are definitely now an “intermediate band”. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets are $10/person or $20/families. All proceeds will go to Tariro.  Mark your calendar! The concert will be held in conjunction with the Boulder Valley UU Fellowship at their facility in Lafayette. I hope to see you there!

And in my efforts to spread beauty, I would like to ask for your help. One of my goals in 2014 is to have the stunning traveling exhibit, St. Hildegard’s Journey Through The Senses go on tour throughout the area so people can enjoy it.  If you know of a church, educational group, or gallery who might be interested in hosting the exhibit and/or having me speak about St. Hildegard please let me know. You may learn more about the exhibit by clicking here.

Finally, on the beauty front… In this season of Advent, which is the darkest time of the year, I am offering a series of three meditations from St. Hildegard on the Holy Spirit who according to St. Hildgard gives us the gifts of the Light.  The entire series can be found on my blog and Facebook page however I’d like to close with one of the meditations below.

Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is a Burning Spirit.
It kindles
the hearts of humankind.
Like tympanum and lyre it plays them,
gathering volume in the temple of the soul.

Holy Spirit is
Life-giving-life,
all movement.

Root of all being.

Purifier of all impurity

Absolver of all faults.

Balm of all wounds.

Radiant life, worthy of all praise,
The Holy Spirit resurrects and awakens
everything that is.

St. Hildegard’s Advent Meditation Series, part I.

In this season of Advent which is the darkest time of the year I am offering a series of three meditations from St. Hildegard on the Holy Spirit who according to St. Hildgard gives us the gifts of the Light.  The first is below.

Holy Spirit,

Through you
clouds billow,
breezes blow,
stones drip with trickling streams,
streams that are the source
of earth’s lush greening.

Likewise,
you are the source of human understanding.

You bless with the breath of wisdom.

Thus all of our praise is yours,
you who are the melody itself of praise,
the joy of life,
the mighty honor,
the hope,
of those to whom you give the gifts
of the light. Saint Hildegard of Bingen.

St. Hildegard’s reply to Hartwig, Archbishop of Bremen.

The last letter in my series of St. Hildegard’s personal correspondence is Hildegard’s reply to Hartwig, Archbishop of Bremen regarding Richardis’ passing. – Jeannine

“If there were ever a time when an “I-told-you-so” response might have been appropriate, this was it.  Yet Hildegard is magnanimous and considerate in her answer to Hartwig, totally respectful of his grief, and hers.  And although she mentions the grief he had caused her, she does so only to inform him that she has cast it completely out of her heart.  Nothing in the correspondence displays the magnificence of this gracious lady better than this brief letter.” – Joseph L. Baird, The Personal Correspondence of Hildegard of Bingen.

Letter 18, to Hartwig, Archbishop of Bremen.

“Oh how great a miracle there is in the salvation of those souls so looked upon by God that His glory has no hint of shadow in them.  But He works in them like a mighty warrior who takes care not to be defeated by anyone, so that his victory may be sure.
Just so, dear man, was it with my daughter Richardis, whom I call both daughter and mother, because I cherished her with divine love, as indeed the Living Light had instructed me to do in a very vivid vision.
God favored her so greatly that worldly desire had no power to embrace her.  For she always fought against it, even though she was like a flower in her beauty and loveliness in the symphony of this world.  While she was still living in the body, in fact, I heard the following words concerning her in a true vision: “O virginity, you are standing in the royal bridal chamber.”  Now, in the tender shoot of virginity, she has been made part of that most holy order, and the daughters of Zion rejoice (Zach 2.10, 9.9).  But the ancient serpent had attempted to deprive her of that blessed honor by assaulting her through her human nobility.  Yet the mighty Judge drew this my daughter to Himself, cutting her off from all human glory.  Therefore, although the world loved her physical beauty and her worldly wisdom while she was still alive, my soul has the greatest confidence in her salvation.  For God loved her more.  Therefore, He was unwilling to give His beloved to a heartless lover, that is, to the world.
Now you, dear Hartwig, you who sit as Christ’s representative, fulfill the desire of your sister’s soul, as obedience demands.  And just as she always had your interests at heart, so you now take thought for her soul, and do good works as she wished.  Now, as for me, I cast out of my heart the grief that you caused me in the matter of this my daughter.  May God grant you, through the prayers of the saints, the dew of His grace and reward in the world to come.” – St. Hildegard of Bingen.

Rhine-grapes

This concludes the series. Although it was only a sample of her letters, the series shows one of many ways in which St. Hildegard manifested Viriditas during her lifetime. What is Viriditas? It is freshness, vitality, fertility, fecundity and fruitfulness. Are you bearing fruit in your life? I would love to hear about some the ways that you are!

The December Tap Into Transformation is using the theme, “CONNECTION”.

What do you want to connect to? Who do you want to connect with? What is calling you? Have you been afraid? Why? We will focus on just that – getting in tune with places and people we need to connect with, and tapping to The Who’s song, “Getting in Tune.”

“I’m singing this note ‘cause it fits in well with the way I’m feeling.
There’s a symphony that I hear in your heart sets my heart a-reeling.
But I’m in tune, right in tune…I’m in tune, and I’m gonna tune right in on you.”

Come and be part of a dynamic community that tap dances together, sings together, dines together, and this month will connect in a unique way.

Join husband and wife duo Dr. Jeannine Goode-Allen and Dr. David Sharp and guest artist Gary Grundei in an evening of transformational song, poetry and tap dancing in our gorgeous and inspiring Viriditas Studio in North Boulder.
